Feedwyre vs. SPS Commerce & TrueCommerce: Do You Need Full EDI?

Feedwyre vs. named alternatives

SPS Commerce and TrueCommerce are both real, capable EDI networks - if a big-box retailer or major distributor is mandating EDI compliance, one of them is probably the right answer. But most of the "can we integrate with your catalog" requests a growing distributor gets aren't from partners who need X12-formatted documents. They're from a reseller with a developer who wants an API, or a small partner who just wants to see live stock and place an order. Here's how the three actually differ for that more common case.

What they're each built for

SPS Commerce is the largest retail EDI network, with a large library of pre-built retailer maps and a fully staffed service model - they handle the mapping and compliance work for you. That service is exactly why it costs what it does: plans generally start in the neighborhood of $99/month, and the real cost scales with how many trading partners and transaction types you connect, not a flat fee.

TrueCommerce covers similar ground with a larger self-service component and a lower typical entry point, often cited in the $20–50/month range before partner-specific mapping is added - still fundamentally the same model: standardized documents, mapped per partner, exchanged in batches.

Both vendors quote based on trading-partner count and transaction volume, so treat the figures above as a starting point for research, not a firm quote - check current pricing directly with each before budgeting.

Feedwyre isn't in the same category. There's no document mapping, no VAN, and no per-partner setup project - one API key (or download link, or portal login) gives a partner live access to your actual catalog and stock, the moment you create it. And if a partner actually does prefer a recurring batch file over live access - the one thing EDI genuinely gets right - Feedwyre offers that too, as a scheduled transfer by email or straight to their own FTP/SFTP server, without any of the mapping or VAN overhead that makes it worth mandating EDI in the first place.

The honest answer: you may need both, eventually

If a major account is contractually requiring EDI, that's not optional, and no feed API changes that. The mistake is treating EDI as the default answer for every partner because it's the loudest request. Most distributors end up running EDI for the handful of accounts that truly require it, and something lighter - an API, a download link, a portal login, or a scheduled email/FTP delivery - for everyone else. Building the EDI project first, before serving the partners who'd be fully served by the lighter option, is usually solving the smaller group first.

For the deeper version of this decision - including when EDI genuinely is the right call - see EDI vs. API: Do You Actually Need an EDI Integration Yet? And for the partners you're going to serve the lighter way, see API key, download link, or portal login? for picking the right one per partner.
